Howdy folks,

The 7th Annual Gunfight Behind the Jersey Lilly – DeadwooD Season 3, was perhaps the best match I’ve ever attended.  Congratulations to all the Cowboys’ members who worked so hard to make this event World Class! Washoe Pete and his range crew for twelve fun and challenging stages; Bodie 601 for his Herculean efforts to build  Deadwood in Norco; to Tupelo Flash for a fantastic night of music and dancing.  Not to overlook the folks that put on the pumpkin bowling, poker tournament and of course the Dammitt Gang for the now famous Night Shoot, and all the unseen volunteers that gave up their time and sweat to make The Gunfight the Premier Cowboy Action match on the West Coast.  Thanks to you all!

Now down to current business.  The annual Territorial Governors’ Summit is next month during the SASS Convention in Las Vegas.  I will be leaving for the Summit on December 5th, and the last day I will be tallying the votes will be December 4th.  I will be polling the general membership at The Cowboys monthly match on November 25th, and you will also be able to vote on the issues via The Cowboys website (www.thecowboys.org).  Take a few minutes to read the Agenda topics and let me know how you want me to vote.  As always, I’m available to discuss the topics and respond to your questions every evening by phone at (714) 739-2721 or via email at IvoryJack8534@aol.com.

TG SUMMIT AGENDA ITEMS

1. Change Classic Cowboy to require Chaps and Spurs at all times and drop the other clothing requirements to three choices.  I recommend ACCEPT.

2. As of now you may get as many Minor Safeties as you incur. Change the rules to limit

Minor Safeties to one per firearm.  I recommend ACCEPT.

3. As of now the shooter is not committed to the stage until the first round goes down range. Change the rule to read a shooter, if properly started, is committed to the stage once the timer sounds.  I recommend REJECT.

4. The largest maximum shot size currently allowed is #4. Change the maximum shot size to #7½.   I recommend ACCEPT.

5. The Proposed New Long Range Optical Category with rules as follows:

(a) No length or power limitation on the scope. Scope tube body to be ¾” or less in diameter and any ocular or objective lenses, adjusting or assembly rings to be less than 1” in diameter.

(b) No internal scope adjustments for windage or elevation.

(c) Mounts are to be of a traditional style of the period, and contain the windage and elevation adjustments for the scope in either, or both, the front or rear mounts. No click adjustments in the mount. Either dove tail mounting or scope block mounting is allowed.

Original scope mounts of either the Cataract or Malcolm style or variations thereof, or replicas or derivative conforms to the criteria of paragraph (c) above.”

This rule matches exactly with the NRA Rifle Silhouette Rules. March 2005.

I recommend ACCEPT.

Discussion Items

  • There has been a proposal to create a SASS sanctioned “Black powder / Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter” shooting category.  Said category would follow the equipment and ammo guidelines of the current “Frontier Cartridge” category AND follow the shooting style requirements of the current “Gunfighter” Category.
  • Boots - Will we ever stop arguing about them?
  • Should we allow 22 caliber Pocket Pistols?
  • Should the Beretta Laramie be allowed to be shot in the Traditional Category?

My last item of business is the January 2008 election of Cowboy Board of Directors members.  Once again I am running for the office of Territorial Governor.  I’d like to thank you all for the trust you’ve placed in me, and I hope the work I’ve done for The Cowboys thus far has met with your approval.  I’d like to continue in the post if you’ll have me.  Thanks for your support!

Your pard,

Ivory Jack McCloud
